Arrested, threatened and fined for collaborating with a human rights defender



Captain Adolfo from the State Security summoned a man to appear at the municipal police, the person refused because the form was not the official one. On the same day at 3 p.m., Captain Adolfo followed by two policemen and the State Security agent Yuniel Done, took the man to the police station where he was threatened, offended, beaten, humiliated and interrogated for his activism. He was banned from leaving the municipality, threatened with legal causes and the withdrawal of his work permit. In addition, he was fined 150 pesos (€ 5) for visiting a human rights defender, Moisés Leonardo Rodríguez Valdés and told that he was already fined 2000 pesos (€ 65) for filing a complaint about violations International Labor Convention on relation to child labor. These fines if not being paid lead to 6 years in prison. He was also threatened with evicting his wife from her job as a primary school teacher. The man assures that it is not the first time that the State Security uses fines and imprisonment to neutralize the work of human rights defenders.
