Emilio was defending his girlfriend in a street skirmish. When the police arrived, he was detained and beaten by police officer Alexis Antonio Frómeta López and Rafael Céspedes, president of the Comittees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR). Emilio was taken to Las Mangas Prison and accused of assault.
