Damián Rodríguez Mejías was detained by police officers along with special troops called Boinas Rojas in the service station of the Cuba Oil Union (CUPET) located on the Avenue and 1 Oeste Street in Guantánamo. Damián learned that chicken meat and oil are being sold nearby his house in the service station. He went there to by some of those products and lined up. However, people standing in the queue were nervous and were complaining about how the queue was disorganized. One of the Boinas Rojas, who was organizing the queue, started to verbally mistreat an elderly man who was waiting in front of Damián. Damián decided to step in and went to one of the military men there. As he was completely ignored, Damián touched his arm to get his attention. However, the military got offended, called a policeman and they detained Damián. Then they took him to the police unit Parque 24 and fined him 30 pesos for disturbance of the public order. He was released two hours later.
