UNPACU activist from Baracoa is attacked on the street by the agents of the State Security

On September 13, 2020, the activist of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU) Ismael Gainsa Jiménez was a target of an attack carried out by the captain of State Security Midelsi Durán Campo along with collaborators Francisco Santos Sáname and Orlis Gainsa. These officers, taking advantage of the fact that the activist was walking alone through a dark area towards his house, tried to hit him with a blunt object, but he managed to escape. The activist says that this officer threatened to have him beaten already in August because, according to the officer, the activist spreads rumours about him in the neighbourhood where he lives. This officer lives one kilometre from the activist's house. At another time, the same officer tried to confiscate the activists’ possessions because, according to the officer, Ismael is engaged in illegal activities. The reason for so much repression is due solely to the fact that the activist maintains a rebellious stance in his neighbourhood known by the name of Jobo Dulce against the injustices committed by this State Security official. The aforementioned officer violates article # 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights where it is stated that no one will be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. The Convention against Torture and Other Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment understands torture as any act by which serious pain or suffering is intentionally inflicted on a person in order to obtain information or a confession from him, to punish him for an act that has committed or is suspected of having committed or of intimidating or coercing a person when said pain or suffering is inflicted by a public official in the exercise of his public functions, at his instigation or with his consent. .
