On 6 October 2019, human rights defender Sissi Abascal was on her way to Washington in order to participate in a scholarship programme. When she approached the check-in counter at the Jose Marti International Airport, she was informed that she would not be able to travel due to a missing document from the embassy. On the top of that, she was appearing in the system as the U.S. resident. Then the U.S. ambassador arrived to the airport and everything was explained. However, the plane had already left so all this was just a way to prevent Abascal from travelling.
