The shortage of pharmaceutical drugs in the pharmacies in Sagua de Tánamo has worsened and affected thousands of patients. The shortage of medications hurts many patients, but especially those who suffer from chronic illnesses such as cancer or diabetes. Innumberable patients, in order to preserve their health, resort to the informal market, where medications are bought for exorbitant prices. According to Mrs. Julia Esther Cortés Jardineínez, who has been hypertensive for more than 30 years, the drugs she takes are almost always out, and she makes frequent hospital visits for medical attention. Independent lawyer and human rights activist, Widhner Jordani Ballester Cortez, affirms that he has to travel to other municipalities in order to buy his medication.
