Bartolo Cantillo Romero was heading to the Santuario del Cobre in Santiago de Cuba to attend Mass which was being held to demand the release of political prisoners, the end of repression and civil and human rights for Cubans. At 7:50, he was detained along with other activists on the road to Santiago de Cuba. They were detained by State Security officials Kevin, Sergio and "El Chino", all instructed by Major Bryan. Bartolo was put to a patrol car and driven to the police unit prosecuting crimes against the state security. He was threatened by Capitán Geidis González and then he was driven several kilometres from his house and left to his fate.
