Eliover Navarro Gainza was arrested on April 17 in Baracoa by officers of the National Revolutionary Police, including Lieutenant Feyo Nicle Hernández and 3 officers of the Special Troops (the Red Berets). The arrest was carried out due to a complaint made by Clara Lovaina Meriño (president of CDR in the area), who indicated that the 29-year-old activist was trying to write alleged anti-government posters. The young Navarro was detained and beaten in the face by Ramiro Galván García (member of the CDR), while members of the police did not take action to stop the aggressions. After his arrest, he was taken to the National Revolutionary Police Unit where he was detained for more than 72 hours under investigation and interrogation by state security and PNR officers. Afterwards, he was transferred to the Municipal Prison where he remains in detention awaiting trial, to which one of the officers indicated that the imprisonment was for reasons of "reckonings and as a way of setting an example to other activists".
