On February 21, 2016, Bartolo Cantillo Romero was going to attend Sunday Mass in the Santuario del Cobre in Santiago de Cuba province. The Mass is carried out in order to support Ladies in White and Todos Marchamos campaign which calls for freedom for political prisoners. At 5 am, Bartolo was detained and beaten by Gilberto Kata, a State Security official and the National Revolutionary Police. He was later driven to the Police Department in El Salvador. He stayed there until 12 pm and the he was released.
