Independent journalist beaten by the secret police and detained for 5 days



On Monday, 22 April 2019, the journalist Roberto Jesús Quiñones Haces was beaten up and detained by secret police when he was trying to cover the process with the evangelical pastors, Ramón and Ayda, who were sentenced for teaching their children at home. The detention took place at 2:10 pm at the entrance of the Municipal Court in Guantánamo, where the trial with the couple was taking place. The journalist was beaten over his mouth and taken to the prison cell. While he was kept at the police unit in Guantánamo, he was not allowed to wash himself. Moreover, he had difficulties to eat for the injuries he got when was detained. He was released 5 days later, on Saturday, 27 April at 3 pm. He was ordered to come for an interrogation at the Provincial Military Tribunal where he would get more information of the alleged crimes of disrespect and attack he was accused of.
