An elderly Cuban citizen was summoned to the labour department, in the department of social assistance and human resources, where she was notified that the $180 Cuban pesos (£6) assistance would be withdrawn because Baracoa was suffering from a natural disaster due to Hurricane Matthew. They added that since her son was already a worker he could support her. The woman was left helpless because her son lives in Guantanamo and has his own family, so now she, at an advanced age and ill, is making life untenable for him.
