An activist from the Cuban Reflection Movement (MCR), Demis Valdés Sarduy, was a victim of a police operation led by a municipal representative of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), Lieutenant Colonel Héctor de la Fé, and three other men wearing civil clothes, most probably secret police officers. The action started on 27 January 2020 at night and lasted until the next day. The reason for that was that somebody threw a red dye on the most emblematic statue of José Martí in the city. Local authorities were therefore afraid of having a similar incident on Martí's 125th birth anniversary and decided to take preventive measures.
