An UNPACU activist detained and prevented from participating in a Human Rights Day event



On 10 December 2020, an activist from the Cuban Patriotic Union (UNPACU), María de las Mercedes Balvier Stelle, was on her way to Guantánamo Province in order to join an event organized on the occasion of the Human Rights Day. She was detained at the Caimanera police checkpoint located at the exit of Guantánamo Municipality. There she was put in the patrol car no. 606 and driven to the unit called Parque 24. There, she was detained for more than 8 hours. She was also threatened by the receiving State Security official Luis Ángel. The official told her that she has not much time left when she is free and if she did not collaborate with them, she would complicate her life and maybe even lose her house.
