Activists detained and fined for buying toys for children

Annia Zamora Carmenate and another activist were in the parking lot of Street 54 in Varadero. Four police officers (two men and two women) approached them and told them they had to accompany them. Both were placed in a police car and driven to the Police Unit of Santa Marta, on Thursday, January 11 at 3:00 p.m. Once at the police station, a detention record was issued where it was written that Carmenate had been arrested for buying toys for the children of Campuzano. Annia demanded from Andrés, a political police officer, her right to a telephone call. He answered that when she was to released, she would be able to use a public telephone. They confiscated five sets of kitchen toys, a doll, a proof of sale for the value of $73.70 CUC (59.3 euro) and another valued at $11.00 CUC (8.8 euro). They then imposed a fine of two thousand pesos of national currency (60 euros). The women were released in Santa Marta at 7:55 p.m.
