Human rights activist from Guantánamo sentenced to one year imprisonment



Yery Curbelo Aguilar, a human rights defender and a member of the Eastern Democratic Alliance (ADO), was sentenced to one year in prison for an alleged crime of assault. On 27 September 2017, he was attacked by two government collaborators, between them Wilmer Mendoza, who is currently sentenced for theft. Although Mendoza started the confrontation against Yery, he was not detained neither prosecuted. According to the source, there were five witnesses speaking up in favor of Yery during the trial, proving that he was innocent. However, he was still found guilty and sentenced.
