An activist from Havana sentenced to 5 years for expressing his opinion



On 15 of July 2016, in the morning, Jorge Agramontés López was walking down the O'Reilly Street in Havana when he saw a policeman harassing a street vendor, trying to confiscate his goods and to fine him. Agramontés expressed his opinion and told the policeman that the peddler has his rights which should be respected. The policeman warned him not to interfere because he could end up badly. The victim replied that he has a right to express his opinion. Few minutes later, a group of officials arrive at the place, some of them wearing a civil clothes and thus probably members of the State Security. The officials beat up both Jorge Agramontés and the peddler. Then they took them to the prison and five days later, Agramontés was given a five-year prison sentence in Havana for an alleged assault. In december 2018, he was transfered to the Guantánamo Prison.
