Mayelin Pena was arrested and beaten when leaving the National Headquarters of the Ladies in White Movement by the combined forces of the State Security, National Revolutionary Police (PNR), Special Branch of PNR, members of the Rapid Response Brigades and the Communist Party. She was detained in order to prevent her from participating in a Mass in the church Santa Rita de Casia which was organized by the Ladies in White. She was released after 12 hours.
