The victim planned to hold a small gathering at his home to commemorate the birthday of the National Coordinator of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), José Daniel Ferrer. The authorities became aware of his intentions and surrounded his home with a patrol car and several uniformed police officers, who remained there until after 8:00 p.m.
