Tania Echevarría Menéndez was about to visit a church in her neighborhood and attend Mass, on Sunday, 21 October. However, she was prevented from reaching her destination by political police officers known as Alberto Surí and Orlando Figueroa. After that she was detained and driven in a patrol car to the psychiatric hospital. Before her release, she was approached by official Alberto Surí who told her: "You are hiring women for your movement and it can cost you a fine 3000 CUP." Then a young official who introduced himself as Lieutenant Colonel Magdiel approached her and told her that he will make her quit the Ladies in White Movement in six months, using official warnings, fines, 96 hours long arrests and last but not least opening a criminal case against her.
