On 11 July, 2021, Niober García Fournier was detained by a Major and several agents from the State Security (DSE), all of them unknown. This happened during protests taking place in the Guantánamo Province as a part of the wave of national protests in the whole country. The activist was first taken to the police station Parque 24 and later to the DSE detention center known as Operations. He was interrogated several times and threatened with imprisonment for an alleged crime of disruption of order and spreading epidemics. He was released on 14 of July at about 5 pm. Before his release he was fined 3000 pesos and received an official warning saying that he cannot attend any other protest and insult the president Díaz-Canel. García Fournier did not accept neither signed the document.
