The Pinar del Río Prosecutor's Office asked for three years of imprisonment with limited freedom for the economist María Caridad Gálvez Chiu, member of the Editorial Board of the magazine Convivencia and the Cuban Observatory of Human Rights, for alleged tax evasion during the purchase transaction of her house. That request of the Public Prosecutor's Office was directed by the State Security, which threatened and detained María various times for being an activist in defense of human rights. In addition, in the case of maintaining her activities in favor of civil society, the sentence would be changed and she would be imprisoned. On January 11, María was arbitrarily detained and taken to the State Security's Operations Training and Investigation Center (located at the 4th kilometer of the road to San Juan and Martínez) for six days for keeping the headquarters of the counterrevolutionary magazine Convivencia at her place. Since that month, was confiscated by the authorities and the agony of not having a response has been a psychological weapon that has been used by the State Security in conjunction with the Prosecutor's Office thus destabilizing the entire Galvez family. Even more, María had to continue paying the real estate tax for the house and there has never been an intention to free her from the payment because she was paying the minimum established by the law.
