Sandalio Mejia was detained when he was, along with other activists, carrying out a peaceful protest in order to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Orlando Zapata Tamayo´s death. Orlando was a political prisoner who decided to go on a hunger strike to draw attention to life conditions in Cuban prisons and who died after fasting for 86 days.
