A human rights activist from Pinar del Río prevented from leaving the country without knowing the reason

On 24 February 2021, an independent lawyer Madelyn Rodríguez Martín visited the Citizen Service Office in order to lodge a complaint concerning the impossibility of extending the validity of her passport due to the ban on leaving the country. When she arrived, she was received by an official responsible for migration issues within the Ministry of the Interior (MININT). The official explained her that she only knew that her travel status was restricted, but she was not aware of the reason for that. During the conversation, Rodríguez Martín explained the official how she had been previously participating in human rights events outside Cuba. The official promptly replied that she was not involved at all in that particular issue and that she would have to approach the State Security Department.
