Activists arrested after attempting to file a complaint about negligent care of a minor in a hospital

Activist Demis Valdés Sarduy’s daughter was admitted on the 17th to the provincial children’s hospital José Luis Miranda in Santa Clara for having developed a Staphylococcus infection, and with it generalized sepsis at birth, last July 9th in the Maternal Hospital of the same city. His daughter presented a change of color, because the nurse on duty, Yennis Bravo, did not adjust the equipment that was supposed to guarantee the dosage and the administration time in her antibiotics vein (which had to be within an hour). Vancomycin and Amicacin were the powerful prescribed antibiotics that, due to the nurse’s negligence, completely entered the child’s bloodstream within a few minutes. The nurse ran away after the incident, has not returned to her job, and has not been given any disciplinary action, even though she brought Mr. Sarduy’s daughter to the brink of death. The next day, without anyone knowing about the baby’s father’s cellphone, the nurse called him to say that the reason for her stampede was because he would hack her up and commit other barbarities, to which he responded, "I am an activist who practices NONVIOLENCE,” just as he called her to a meeting with the director of the hospital. The nurse did not appear. To deal with the problem, the child was given an antidote that brought her back to normal, but it remains to be seen whether the child, who was 21 days old at the time, will experience any organ damage due to the unfortunate event. Valdés Sarduy and Librado Ricardo Linares García met at 9 in the morning in front of the provincial Children's Medical Care Program (PAMI) in the aforementioned city to file complaints, but Mr. García was arrested in the vicinity of the institution, by the head of the Department of Confrontation to the Counterrevolution known as Erik Francis (Marcos) and returned to his home in Camajuaní with a prohibition to leave for the rest of the day. Mr. Francis then threatened Linares Garcia by stating, “you are behaving badly, and it will cost you dearly”. In the vicinity of the medical facility, where the child was staying, a large operation was carried out by State Security Department (DSE) officers. According to the agressors, 15 other activists were arrested. On Monday the 5th, at 9 a.m., the little girl was discharged, but with the condition that the PAMI of Placetas had to transfer her back to her municipality of residence. Finally, they had to send an ambulance from the provincial capital at 4:30 in the afternoon because the medical authorities of Placetas did not comply with the task as there is a great deficit of these specialized cars in Cuba.
