Defendant accused of promoting 11J sentenced to 8 years in prison without Due Process



On July 15, 2021, Ciro Alexis Casanova was summoned to the PNR station and accused of being one of the promoters of the 11J protest, for which he was arrested and sent to a criminal investigation in Caibarien. On July 19, 2021, the Municipal Prosecutor's Office of Placetas imposed a precautionary measure of provisional imprisonment and sent him to the men's penitentiary center ¨La Pendiente. There he was detained without due process, since he was not brought before the competent court within the established time to be given an oral trial and assigned an ex officio attorney by the State for legal representation because he did not have the financial resources to hire one from the collective law firm. His trial was carried out between December 15 and 17, 2021 in the Popular Municipal Court of Santa Clara and he was sentenced to 8 years of imprisonment for the crimes of public disorder, contempt and attack.
