A young man unjustly sentenced

Juan Gabriel Ruiz Martínez is a young Cuban man who was unjustly sentenced for a crime he did not committed. He was accused of human trafficking and sentenced to 8 years in prison. In reality, he was captured by police when trying to escape Cuba by boat in 2016. His family and friends say, that it was a way how to escape extreme poverty he lives in. He is now imprisoned in Sandino Prison in Pinar del Río. According to the source, Juan Gabriel was several times beaten, handcuffed and legcuffed in his cell just because he told about his story to other human rights defenders in Pinar del Río. His family is extremely worried about him and his health. Cuban government put this kind of trials into practice as many people tried to escape by boat to the United States and the authorities had to somehow reduce the number of emigrants.
