Miguel Ángel López Herrera is a human rights activist from the United Anti-Totalitarian Forum (FANTU), based in the Guantánamo Province. On 17 June 2021, he was detained at home by two State Security (DSE) agents who did not identify themselves. The purpose was to ensure that the visit of the president Díaz-Canel in the Eastern provinces would go smoothly without any interruption. López Herrera left the house after 6 am in order to buy some food. When he returned at 8:30 am, he ended up arrested. The agents put him in a car which was standing opposite his house. After 45 minutes in the car, the agents apparently received new orders and López Herrera was released. Before that, he was warned not to leave his house during the president’s visit in the area.
