Tania Echevarría Menéndez participated in the Seminar for Democracy in Cuba held in Miami and sponsored by the Fundación Rescate Jurídico, through the Institute of Cuban and Cuban-American Studies (ICCAS) with it's headquarters at the University of Miami. Upon her return, she was intercepted in the airport by State Security agents who detained her for several hours to review all of her belongings. Following customs regulations, she was prohibited from bringing some items with her.
