Imprisoned and harassed for criticizing the government and defending human rights

Yoenni Joel Guerra García, an independent Cuban journalist, was arbitrarily and violently arrested in 2013, facing 20 years in prison for slaughtering cattle. While imprisoned, he reports that he was tortured, raped, and drugged. Although he wrote and pointed out the culprits, the Political Police did not take action. He was later admitted to a psychiatric center, where he tried to take his own life. García claims that the charges against him were made up as a result of the articles that he wrote criticizing the government and in support of human rights.
