A human rights defender at Guantánamo was detained for demanding the authorities to fulfill their duty.

On the night of June 7, 2014, José Cano Fuentes participated in the celebration of the popular festival known as the Guantanamera Night on Los Maceos Street, where, for unknown reasons, several people who enjoyed the party started a tumultuous fight in this same street. Several officers of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) were located a few meters away and they did nothing to prevent this situation. The peaceful opponent, José Cano Fuentes, along with 3 other human rights activists, approached the officers to ask them if they were going to wait for someone to die to stop the chaos. After this comment, one of the officers began to beat up José who automatically started shouting anti-government slogans, while the other people yelled at the officers that they were committing an injustice. Later, Cano Fuentes was taken to the police unit, Parque 24, and was later transferred to the operations detention center, where the Criminal Investigator known as Charlot told him that he was accused of an attack. After 72 hours, José Cano Fuentes was released free of charge.
