Prevention of opposition rally to mark the anniversary of the events of "El Maleconazo" in 1994.

Maikel Armentero, member of the Cuba Independent and Democratic Party, was detained together with other activists in the morning on Estrada Palma Street, in the city of Santa Clara. Maikel and his colleagues were going to an event to commemorate the events that occurred on August 5th 1994, commonly known as El Maleconazo. Maleconazo is the name of a series of anti-government emonstrations on August 5th 1994, which were considered some of the most prominent since the beginning of the Cuban Revolution. The incidents started after the Cuban authorities intercepted four ships that sailed to the coast of the United States without authorization. The activist was approached by government allies, handcuffed, and put in police vehicle, which took him along different city streets before releasing him close to his home.
