On December 24, Yobel Sevila Martinez was on the Boulevard of the city Guantanamo along with the national coordinator of the Cuban Youth Movement for Democracy, Yordis Garcia Fournier, celebrating Christmas Eve when two uniformed policemen approached them and required their ID. The incident occurred informally and violently, so Sevila Martinez refused to show them his personal documents. Then, in protest of the behavior of the officials, Yobel started to shout slogans against Cuban political system.
The reaction of police was immediate; several agents who were near rushed to the scene and handcuffed and detained Yobel violently. When Yobel continued his protest, he was beaten and neutralized by pepper spray by several police officers.
Yobel was detained 24 hours without any medical assistance.
