Yolanda Santana was detained and beaten when she was leaving the national headquarters of the Ladies in White movement. She was detained by the combined forces of the Department of State Security (DSE), National Revolutionary Police (PNR), Special Brigade of the PNR, members of the Rapid Response Brigades and the Communist Party, to prevent her from attending the Mass at the Santa Rita de Casia church.
