Activist was sentenced to house arrest and soon moved to prison

In September 2013, Yeri Curbelo, a resident of the municipality Caimanera and coordinator of the Eastern Democratic Alliance (ADO), denounced the mass death of fish in the Bay of Caimanera, and thus highlighted the concerns of the locals largely dependent on fishing, which is the livelihood of dozens of fishermen. Following this complain, Curbelo had to face repression by secret police officers. In 2014, the activist was sentenced to three years of imprisonment - which was changed to correctional work without internment - on charges of "contempt" for speaking out against the Castro regime in a streets in Havana. In February 2015, the police authorities in Guantanamo province proposed the change of his "precautionary measure". This would mean the revocation of his house arrest in his admission to the Provincial Prison of Guantánamo. Curbelo was detained on February 19, 2015 and taken to the police station. He was eventually transferred to the prison on 25 February.
